We have a whopper of a project.  How would you like a PUZZLE of Morro Bay??

My husband and I have been working 2 puzzles a week during Covid.  It relaxes your brain and I think reduces stress.

Anyway to make a very long story short the artist Eric Dowdle, of Dowdle Folk Art, came to MB, we gave him a tour and introduced him to some of our businesses that will be on the puzzle; Dorns, Giovannis, Dutchmans, the Shell Shop, and the Morro Bay Oyster co.  The puzzles will be out in late July, Eric will come back to Morro Bay and do an unveiling and the puzzles will be available at several businesses around town and all of the businesses that are on the puzzle.  MBBeautiful has exclusive rights to sell the puzzle for one year and then they will be sold World Wide.

It all started last Sept. when I introduced the idea at a Board Meeting and got an approval to spend money for the Project Puzzle.  Cindy Sutter, our Treasurer, got the ball rolling by contacting the company.  At first they wouldnt respond.  Then we sent them pictures of Morro Bay and they sent an enthusiastic response.  They had researched Morro Bay and found out that in 2020 it was Morro Bays 150thanniversary (sesquicentennial).                    This will help our city and our businesses.  Im very excited!!!

Litter We are doing really well keeping up with all the litter and so many tourist in town.    It really helped that we added two people, Janelle & Bill Bland.  They do a really good job and each time they have cleaned up they have found money.

Chuck & Carol Harkins have sponsored our web site again.  We really appreciate you two!!

Cindy Sutters cigarette butt bucket project is going strong.  She has them scattered along the water front.  If you see one of the buckets feel free to clean it out.  Cindy and some helpers clean them once a week but they get used a lot.

Sandspit cleanup Look for a date in September for a free boat ride and a lot of stuff to pick up.

Membership Meeting April 10 th @ 10 AM, Dorns Restaurant, side room.
Please RSVP @ 772-8117.  Vote in our new President.

We need to know how many are coming.

Dear Morro Bay BEAUTIFUL Members and friends,

Well the city is a bit of a mess…..or a lot, of a mess.

Lots of visitors here this past Memorial Day weekend, and I don’t blame them.  The weather is right, we have the beach, we have/had the quiet, and its just a nice place to come.

Anyway, back to the mess: stickers, graffiti, and LOTS OF TRASH.  So now is a good time to take a walk, bring a razor blade (to remove stickers from polls and signs), gloves and a bag for trash.  Don’t forget all the “access to beach” areas.  The beach is the main area that our visitors come.  Take the trash home and put it in your trash can OR use any trash can the city has.

We have started to do tree wells in Olde Town, again.  They are all grown over and need to be weeded, cleaned out and then mulched.  Our businesses need our support and help, they have been thru a lot.

Can you adopt a tree well or an area of town to clean up??  Take a picture of it before you clean it and one after and send them to me.

We’ll have things back in shape in no time😊

September 2019 Newsletter

Coastal Clean Up Day it Sept 21st – California State Parks will be cleaning up all the parks.  We will concentrate on cleaning up beaches, the week of Sept 21 thru the 28th.  To avoid germs, wear gloves, and cover at least a section of the beach from Yerba Buena to Colman Park, on the Embarcadero.  Let’s make our fish happy with clean water.

Sand Spit Clean Up – Oct. 26th , more details later

Adopt a Hwy Clean up – This is our big need right now.  One of our people had to quit because of illness, so we are looking for at least one or two more people to help with this.  It’s once a month, 2 hours of your time.  Call Melody DeMeritt  if you can help or want more info.  She will train you.

Cigarette Butt Buckets One of our current campaigns is to “Keep the butts out of the bay”.  Cigarette butt filters contain so much plastic there is a company which recycles the butts to make other plastic products;  these are not biodegradable. Our intent is to provide an alternative to simply dropping the butts on the ground.  We currently have five buckets in place; one at Coleman Park, one along side the basket ball court, one by the statue across from The Rock, one near Anchor Park and one in town at the request of a local business.  Any suggestions as to where others should be placed is greatly appreciated.

Cindy Sutter 459-9956 started this program about 4 weeks ago  ….and lo and behold the butt buckets are being used…YEAH!  We would like to expand this program and are looking for donations or help.

Donations – speaking of donations.  We have quit charging a membership fee, which helped pay for some of our smaller projects.  We are asking for, a once a year donation, at this time.  Please send whatever you can to assure our work can go on.

Tuesday clean up (every other week)– we currently meet @ 7:30 AM @ Sun N Buns to:  remove stickers and graffiti from wherever.  We also pick up litter and clean out tree wells, whenever we have enough people.

Library – I love our library.  They are having a book sale this Sat the 28th from 9 – 4 PM.  I just got a Farmers Almanac from them so I could see the weather for the year.  They have magazines and can get any book you want.  They need yoursupport!!

Dear Members & friends,

Today our artist is doing our 25th Art Can.  Our sponsor is Ian Erickson.

Do you know him?  He is 95 years old and has lived in Morro Bay for a long time.

We are having the dedication of the Art Can, July 7th @ 11:30 AM, in the Cloister Park, by the playground.  If you know Ian, please come.  It will only be from 11:30 to 12:30, so we don’t tire him out.

Here is a picture of Kim Hixson painting our Art Can…..

Summer clean up – God bless the tourist, but we have way more trash during the summer and we need a little more help.  Please join us at 7:30 @ Sun & Buns bakery on the Embarcadero, choose the area you would like to clean, get supplies from us, get some exercise, and spiff up Morro Bay.

Looking for “Committed Citizens”

”Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world:  indeed it’s the only thing that ever has”….Margaret Mead

This is the quote with which Morro Bay BEAUTIFUL ends every newsletter.

So, when we decided to have “no membership dues” and change our website, we changed “Membership” to Committed Citizen”,because that’s actually what we are.  We are always looking for committed citizens who want to help make Morro Bay even more beautiful.

Annual City-Wide Yard SaleTBID (the Morro Bay tourism Board) is now in charge of the yard sale.  Their contact number is (805) 225-7411 X 2 – ask for Liz.

The yard sale has been a challenge.  For instance, we could not guarantee that people’s addresses would be in the right place on the map, thus we had to issue refunds.  When “God” got involved (it rained), we knew we needed to make a change☺.

ScholarshipsCindy Sutter has researched how we can help our local students, and has come up with two scholarships that MBB will award this year.  We will know the details after March 22nd.  She is also looking into classes at the High School that have a trash pick-up or a clean-up day that we can support.

Earth Day is April 22nd and we will do our part to clean up our beaches.

Our event date will be Tuesday April 23rd – A nice walk and a little exercise.

  • We will meet at Coleman park, at the north end of the Embarcadero by the bathrooms, at 9:00 AM
  • You will go pick up litter on a section of beach with a partner
  • At 11:30 AM we will meet back at the same place in Coleman park (with your trash).    The State wants to inventory the trash we will deliver to them.
  • Then we will go to pizza at Round Table on Quintana (by Albertsons) …cost $5.00 per person.
  • Call Karen Kubarekfor additional information –(518) 466-4421
